The latest episode of Pacific Standard Time explores Spike Lee's underrated Sucker Free City (2004), a movie that I previously discussed here. Here's the background: back in the early Zeros, Spike Lee was going to direct an epic, sprawling tv series on San Francisco. Based on a screenplay by local wunderkind Alex Tse, Sucker Free City could have become the SF equivalent of "The Wire". Alas, the project did not take off. All we have is a 2-hour pilot, which became a tv movie for Showtime. A topographic memento, the film describes the lives (and deaths) of a variety of characters in three districts: Mission, Chinatown and Hunters' Point aka "HP". Highly recommended.
Note: This article part of Pacific Standard Time, my ongoing exploration of "Cinematic San Francisco", for Duellanti magazine. There's more to come, so stay tuned.
