Issue 8 of media journal LINK. Idee per la televisione is now available and it features my essay on digital quiz games, as part of an ongoing investigation on the convergence between videogames and television. Specifically, I look at titles like 1 vs 100 on Xbox Live and successful series like Buzz! for the PlayStation platforms to explain why TV - and not cinema - can teach digital games one thing or two. The ongoing collaboration with Endemol and Microsoft, for instance, could introduce new genres of gaming, or better, provide new interesting remediation of established TV formats on game consoles. I have previously explored the connection between karaoke games (SingStar) and TV shows like American idol, and I am currently writing a piece on the evolution of business models (i.e. the rise of subscription services modeled after pay-per-view packages). The theme of LINK 8 is the reinvention of TV in the Web 2.0 age. Lot's of juicy stuff, including essays from Aldo Grasso, Francesco Casetti, Violetta Bellocchio, Fausto Colombo, Massimo Scaglioni, Jeremy Boxen, Michele Boroni, Antonio Dini, Aldo Romersa, Andrea Lissoni, Bucknasty, Axel Fiacco, Peppino Ortoleva, Carlo Alberto Carnevale Maffé, Gregorio Paolini, Mariarosa Mancuso, Marco Vecchia, Emilio Pucci (e-Media Institute), Federico Sarica.
As always, LINK features the very best graphic design. See for yourself:
