"I've just finished reading your piece on "james ballard plays burnout" and I wanted to share something with you. I love Burnout Paradise. I played obsessively all the episodes of the series.
Lately, something strange is happening to me. When I am behind the wheel of my car - the 'real' one - I often find myself thinking about being involved in outrageous and brutal accidents. Mind me, I drive very slowly these days. I respect the rules, you know...
Still, I picture in my mind spectacular, loud crashes. Boom - the collision, the implosion, the airbag - but no blood at all. The car is gone, wrecked, destroyed. But I am not there, wounded and injured inside the vehicle. No blood, no driver, no body at all...
When I used to drive fast, challenging the speed limits, I had never had these fantasies. Perhaps, my death drive was getting its satisfaction by the overt transgression - driving way too fast in an urban environment put my life - and the lives of others - in danger...
But now that I am a "model driver", I find myself imagining the catastrophic effects of a crash.
Good thing I love videogames, or I would be already dead..." (Claudio Tradardi)
